Fraktur Text Generator

Gothic blackletter style inspired by medieval German calligraphy.

Fraktur turns plain letters into the dense, angular blackletter you'd see on a medieval manuscript, a heavy-metal album cover, or the masthead of an old German newspaper. It reads as gothic, formal, and a little bit ominous, which is exactly why it lands so well on band logos, fantasy character names, and "old money" aesthetic posts. Use it when you want text that feels carved or hand-inked rather than typed.

How Fraktur Text Works

This style swaps each A-Z and a-z character for its dedicated Mathematical Fraktur counterpart in Unicode. Most letters come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block (U+1D504 onward) โ€” for example 'f' becomes ๐”ฃ and 'r' becomes ๐”ฏ. A handful of capitals (C, H, I, R, Z and a few others) are pulled from the older Letterlike Symbols block instead (โ„ญ, โ„Œ, โ„‘, โ„œ, โ„จ), because Unicode standardized those particular blackletter glyphs there years earlier. The result is genuine substituted characters, not a font swap, so the gothic look travels anywhere that supports Unicode. Note that only Latin letters are mapped: digits, spaces, and punctuation pass through unchanged, since the Fraktur range doesn't include them.

Tips for Using Fraktur Text

  • Fraktur capitals are notoriously hard to read at a glance โ€” for usernames or tags, keep them short and prefer lowercase Fraktur, which stays more legible than the ornate uppercase forms.
  • Because only letters convert, your numbers and symbols will look plain next to the gothic text. If you need a styled number, write it as a Roman numeral or spell it out so the whole string matches.
  • Pair Fraktur with a couple of decorative symbols like crosses (โœ ) or daggers (โ€ ) around the words for a heavier gothic banner without sacrificing readability of the letters themselves.

Fraktur Text Compatibility

Renders reliably on most modern desktop and mobile browsers, Instagram, Discord, X/Twitter, and Tumblr because the Mathematical Fraktur range is widely supported. A few of the capitals borrowed from the Letterlike Symbols block (โ„ญ, โ„Œ, โ„‘, โ„œ, โ„จ) can look slightly different from the others on older Android keyboards or low-end devices, and some apps may show a tofu box if a font lacks those glyphs. It is not accessible to screen readers, which read these as math symbols rather than letters, so avoid it for essential information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Fraktur the same as a blackletter font I'd install on my computer?

No. A font changes how normal letters are drawn while the underlying characters stay A-Z. Here the actual characters are swapped for separate Unicode Fraktur symbols, so the gothic look stays attached to the text and copies into apps that don't let you change fonts at all, like Instagram bios.

Why do some capital letters look a little different from the rest?

Letters like C, H, I, R, and Z use Fraktur glyphs from Unicode's Letterlike Symbols block (โ„ญ, โ„Œ, โ„‘, โ„œ, โ„จ), which was standardized before the main Mathematical Fraktur range. Most fonts harmonize them, but on some devices these capitals can look slightly heavier or differently proportioned.

Can I use Fraktur for my gaming or clan name?

Yes, and it suits dark, medieval, or horror themes especially well. Just check your platform first โ€” some games and launchers restrict names to plain ASCII and will reject these symbols, and the ornate capitals can be hard for teammates to read or type.

Why didn't my numbers turn gothic?

The Unicode Fraktur set only covers Latin letters, so digits and punctuation pass through unchanged. To keep a number on-theme, spell it out or use a Roman numeral so it visually matches the blackletter lettering.

Where to Use Fraktur Text

  • Metal, punk, or dark-fantasy band names and merch text where a carved blackletter look is expected
  • Gaming clan tags and RPG character names (think necromancers, knights, vampire roleplay) that need a gothic edge
  • Instagram or Tumblr 'old money' and dark academia aesthetic captions and bio headers
  • Discord server titles, role names, and announcement headings for medieval or horror-themed communities
  • Tattoo mockups and lyric graphics where you want an inked, hand-lettered feel before committing to ink
  • Wedding-style or 'olde worlde' invitations and event flyers shared as images or social text
