Underline Text Generator

Text with a line underneath for emphasis.

Underline text adds a continuous line beneath your words without italics, bold, or any font change — just a clean horizontal stroke under each letter. It's the most understated of the decorator styles, useful when you want emphasis that looks like a real underline rather than a flashy effect. Because the line rides under ordinary letters, it stays perfectly readable while still drawing the eye.

How Underline Text Works

This style leaves your letters as completely normal ASCII characters and overlays a single combining mark on each one. After every character it inserts U+0332 (Combining Low Line), the Unicode combining diacritic that renders as a short underline beneath the preceding glyph. Because each character carries its own underline segment, the segments butt up against each other and read as one unbroken line across the whole word. Nothing about the base letters is converted — an "a" is still the letter "a" — which is why the output stays fully searchable and screen-reader friendly. Spaces and punctuation also receive the mark, so the underline continues even through gaps, giving it that solid printed-textbook look.

Tips for Using Underline Text

  • Underline whole phrases sparingly — one or two underlined words pull far more focus than an entire underlined sentence
  • It pairs cleanly with bold or italic styles: copy your text, run it through bold first, then underline, to stack both effects on the same word
  • Avoid underlining over characters with descenders (like g, y, p, j) in tiny font sizes, where the line can visually collide with the tail of the letter

Underline Text Compatibility

Renders reliably on Discord, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/X, Facebook, Reddit, WhatsApp, and most modern mobile keyboards because U+0332 is a long-standing, widely-supported combining mark. In a few older apps or condensed fonts the underline segments can show tiny gaps between letters instead of one solid line, and some platforms (notably parts of Discord that already support native underline markdown) may render it slightly thicker than expected. It stays fully copy-paste safe everywhere, and since the underlying letters are plain text, search and accessibility tools read it normally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the underline sometimes look broken instead of one solid line?

Each letter gets its own underline segment from the combining mark, and the line is meant to touch the next one. In most fonts the segments connect seamlessly, but in narrow or older fonts the letter spacing can leave hairline gaps. Switching to a different app or font usually restores the unbroken look.

Is this the same as the underline button in Word or Discord markdown?

No. Word's underline and Discord's __underline__ markdown are formatting applied by the app, which disappears when you copy the text elsewhere. This version bakes the underline into the characters themselves using a Unicode combining mark, so it travels with the text into bios, captions, and apps that have no underline button at all.

Will underlined text still be readable and searchable?

Yes. The letters underneath are ordinary ASCII, so the word 'underline' is still literally spelled with a, b, c characters plus an invisible line mark on each. Search, autocorrect, and screen readers treat it as normal text, which is a big advantage over styles that swap letters for look-alike symbols.

Can I underline emojis, numbers, or spaces too?

Numbers and spaces underline cleanly, so the line carries through gaps for a continuous look. Emojis and some symbols won't show the line because their glyphs sit outside the area where the combining mark is drawn — the mark is still applied, it just isn't visible under those characters.

Where to Use Underline Text

  • Drawing attention to a single keyword in a Discord or forum message where the platform has no native underline button
  • Marking a 'link-style' call to action in an Instagram or TikTok bio (e.g. an underlined word that mimics a hyperlink)
  • Underlining a name or title in a plain-text resume, email signature, or note-taking app that strips formatting
  • Adding quiet emphasis to terms in study notes, flashcards, or vocabulary lists pasted into Notion or Google Keep
  • Creating a clean header or section label in plain-text README files, bios, and profile 'about' sections
  • Highlighting the answer or key term in a quiz, trivia post, or comment where rich formatting isn't allowed
